Arica Chilean Challenge Kicks OnRiptideFri May 24 04:57:22 CEST 2013

Arica Chilean Challenge Kicks On
Rounds Two and Three roll on in massive conditions.

Remember that big Pacific swell we told you about yesterday? It kept on coming at Chile with a vengeance, producing 8-12 foot conditions at El Gringo for the second and third rounds of the Arica Chilean Challenge. You probably already know that though, looking up at that ludicrous Hubb air above you. Unsurprisingly, this was on the way to one of the highest heat scores of the day and earned him 1st place in Round 3, Heat 16.

Yoan Florantin was also killing it, scoring the highest heat score of the day with a 16.21 on the back of a near-perfect barrel. The day wasn't without its casualties though, with Mike Stewart, Sacha Specker and Jared Houston all failing to progress through to Round 4. Jerry's exit from the competition was particularly eventful, getting worked on arguably the biggest wave of the day and losing his fin.

Twenty minutes is where you'll find Jerry's particularly heinous beatdown.

Incredibly, tomorrow is looking to have another slight increase in swell. Providing that El Gringo is able to hold the conditions, we could be strapped in for ones of the most memorable days of competitive bodyboarding this year.

Stay tuned with us for more updates as the Chilean Challenge moves on up to the pointy end.

Diego Cabrera ReturnsRiptideFri May 24 02:55:45 CEST 2013

Diego Cabrera Returns
A year on from a near-fatal accident at El Gringo, Diego's back and better than ever.

Just twelve months ago, Diego hit his head on the landing of a particularly brutal air reverse at El Gringo, Chile, and was taken to hospital with a life-threatening brain haemorrhage. Within that year not only has he fully recoved, he's out there pulling the high-performance shit that makes this clip so amazing.

Cheers to Adriana Suances for producing this inspirational little clip.

Despite the difficult conditions - three days of disoriented and gusty winds - sailors were able to complete two races.

The organization worked hard to try to get more races, but even if the windsurfing fleet had spent many hours on the water every day, nothing could be done.

Surfing: all the mysteries of wave riding unveiled

The history of surfing is very rich. There are multiple facts and figures surrounding the evolution of wave riding, through time. Some are strange, others are deeply bizarre.

From the innovative surf gear to maritime science, surfing has been collecting stories, records and achievements. Did you know that...

1. The Hawaiian Islands are the most isolated archipelago on planet earth.
2. The windiest surf city in the world is Wellington, capital of New Zealand.
3. The tallest tsunami ever recorded so far is the 1958 Lituya Bay mega tsunami, which had a record height of 524 meters (1740 feet).
4. Injuries affect one in three surfers.

Earplugs: protect from surfer's ear

The new Seals Balance Pro by EQ earplugs allow surfers to protect their ears and hear everything when wearing them.

When spring and summer start, everyone surfs more often. Also, all-year round surfers are more exposed to severe ear injuries, such as the surfer's ear (Exostosis) and swimmer's ear (Otitis).

This problem can be developed after 3000 hours of cold water surfing. Neoprene hoodies and ear plugs are the best way to avoid surgery.

Horse surfing: riding horses and riding waves | Photo: Horse-surfing.com

Horseboarding is the modern version of chariot racing that promises to pump extreme hearts and classic horse lovers.

They say taking off is the hardest part. Please welcome the world of horseboarding, where horsepower is, in fact, the power output of a horse. Not a jet ski.

Horseboarding can be enjoyed both in the water of oceans and rivers and in countryside race tracks. If you live by the sea, grab a surfboard, kite board, wake board or skim board and prepare to speed up to the 40 miles per hour (40 km/h).

Up to 64 bodyboarders and surfers from the North of Portugal and the Spanish region of Galicia have competed at Cabedelo Beach and Arda Beach, in Viana do Castelo.

With a mobile structure and a new live scoring system, the level of competition was high in the 2-4 foot waves on offer. Portuguese riders claimed four out of five titles at the XV Luso Galaico Championship.
